A Wilmington police officer was recently arrested. Thomas Oliver Jr. was charged with rape, extortion and official misconduct. Wilmington city police say a woman who was wanted for her arrest was walking on the 700 block of East Ninth Street on Oct. 16 when police officer Thomas Oliver Jr. pulled up next to her and told her to get in the passenger seat of the patrol vehicle, after he explained to her that there was a warrant out for her arrest he then exposed himself and asked the women to perform sexual acts on him. The woman reported the incident the same day and explained to the Wilmington Police Chief that she didn’t remember exactly what was said but she knew if she didn’t comply she would be taken to jail. She complied and was then instructed to leave by the officer. Thomas Oliver Jr, an 11 year old veteran of the force was immediately suspended as a police officer and was conducted on a long 4 month investigation where he was arrested on Tuesday February 12 on a $66,000 cash bail. “The charge that one of our officers abused his authority to victimize a member of the public in this manner is sickening.” says Police Chief Robert J. Tracy.
