The Famous R&B artist R Kelly is being charged with 10 counts of felony aggravated sex abuse. For the past two decades the singer has been dodging accusations of sexual assault starting in 1994 when he married 15 year old Aaliyah. The illegal marriage was then later annulled in February 1995 by her parents. In 2008 Kelly was taken to trial with allegations of sexually abusing a 13 year old girl. He also paid monetary settlements to several women who have accused him of both sexual and physical abuse. New attention has been brought to these accusations with the new documentary series “Surviving R.Kelly” that has aired in January. It consists of Kelly’s many victims that want their voices to be heard and want to share their stories of alleged abuse. The series is being credited to bring renewed attention to Kelly’s multiple accusations of raping underage girls. The #metoo movement is also being credited with gathering more information about this case, this movement sparked other victims to speak out and share their stories. On February 22nd, R Kelly turned himself into Chicago police after being indicted on the sexual abuse charges. Attorney Michael Avenatti has gathered evidence against Kelly which includes a 40 minute long tape where he is raping a 14 year old girl. Michael Avenatti claims that in the video both Kelly and the victim refer to her age multiple times in the video. If Kelly is found guilty he could face up to 70 years in prison.
