On October 17th 2023, Mexico played the four time World Cup Champions Germany in a friendly match played at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. The crowd was very rowdy with this being the first time Mexico played in Philadelphia since 2015.
In the cold windy night Germany opened the score with a corner kick goal by Antonio Rudiger. Minutes later Mexico came back with a goal of their own by Antuna. After half-time Mexico led the score with a second goal by Sanchez. Mexico had the momentum with the fans making a lot of noise putting more pressure on the Germans. Then in the middle of the half Germany managed to get one more goal making the game end in a 2-2 tie.
Even though the game ended in a tie, to the media this was seen as a win for Mexico and a pitiful performance by the Germans. The media criticized the new German team coach Julien Nagelsmann for failing to win in his first game coaching the squad. Tensions continue to rise between the German federation and the fans as they are increasingly getting frustrated with the team’s lack of quality ahead of the 2024 Euros tournament that Germany is hosting.
