In July 2024, people began to poop in the Paris River to protest poor water quality due to the lack of public restrooms, homelessness, and tourism. This protest wanted changes to be made to improve sanitation and provide more facilities. The city of Paris spent almost $1.5 billion in order to clean up the river waste so athletes who were competing in the 2024 Olympics weren’t in danger. This is a reminder to the public about the importance of proper sanitation and public facilities.
