Nuketown, often thought of as a fictional setting from the Call of Duty video game series, is actually based on a real location—the Nevada Test Site, now known as the Nevada National Security Site, located about 65 miles north of Las Vegas. From 1951 to 1962, this area became the site of over 100 atmospheric nuclear tests, where the U.S. government detonated bombs in an effort to study the effects of nuclear explosions on military structures and civilian populations. The “Nuketown” test areas were designed to mimic suburban neighborhoods, complete with houses, cars, and streets, to observe how a nuclear blast would impact a typical American town. While the tests were conducted in a remote area, they exposed nearby communities, including workers and residents of Las Vegas, to dangerous radiation levels. Many people living in the surrounding areas unknowingly suffered from radiation sickness, and some even developed cancers and other serious health conditions as a result of the fallout. These long-term effects have left a devastating legacy on those who lived in the region during the era of nuclear testing.
