Across the country, drivers are receiving text messages and calls claiming to be from the Tollways accusing them of “toll evasion” or having unpaid tolls. These EZ Pass scam messages are saying there is a time limit or to respond immediately for urgency and no time to stop and think about clicking links/other things that can give scammers information. CNBC says the scam is called “smishing,” a scam that blends SMS messaging with phishing. Phishing is a type of cybercrime in which scammers impersonate sources in an attempt to steal sensitive data.
Don’t click on links in texts, this is because scammers expect you to react quickly, but stop and check it out. Also don’t say “yes” or “no” in text messages or calls because they can switch words around to make you feel or seem like a victim in a worse cause. Lastly, Report and delete these text messages. Use the “report junk” button and report texts to your messaging app. After this…delete the text.
