The Environmental Integrity Project, an organization that “empowers communities and protects public health and the environment by investigating polluters, holding them accountable under the law, and strengthening public policy”, recently released a claim that 97% of Delaware rivers and streams are too polluted for both water recreation and aquatic life. This percentage means that Delaware has the most impaired waterways in the USA, with New Jersey at 95% following it. The factors most involved include chemical factories, chicken slaughterhouses, and the excessive use of fertilizers. Possible effects of the dirty and impaired waterways include cancer, miscarriages, and birth defects. The Environmental Protection Agency is setting goals to achieve cleaner water.
