    On This Day in History

On this day, 54 years ago, the first artificial heart was surgically implanted.  Surgeon, Denton Cooley, made the first implanted artificial heart in a human patient on April 4, 1969.  Although, some days later, the patient did receive a heart from a donor, they did die later on.  But this remarkable surgery revealed more opportunities in the biomedical industry through artificial organs and their successful implementation into living things.  Previously in 1968, Cooley performed the first successful heart transplant, a year prior to the artificial heart.  Dr. Denton Cooley’s significance furthers into today’s medical field through his 1,300 papers and 12 books of which he either authored or co-authored.  A continuous inspiration for progression in the medical field.
