A safety alert has been issued after several people across the United States have been infected with Salmonella from Onions
The outbreak is across 22 states, the most being in California and Utah with 17 cases each. Other states with 6 cases or lower include Michigan, Oregon, Illinois, and more. The outbreak may even be more significant as undocumented cases have not been reported, citing concern.
The CDC says that the outbreak traces back to onions being processed by Gillis Onions, with the company recently recalling certain products such as diced red and yellow onions, and diced celery. The products were then distributed to stores across the United States and Canada to be bought and eaten. The cause of how the disease had spread to the onions is unknown. Still, the CDC says that if you believe to have contaminated onions, throw them away immediately, and wash any surfaces the onions or their containers may have touched.
If you believe you are experiencing symptoms of Salmonella, contact your primary care provider immediately. Most people experience symptoms such as fever and stomach issues, and adults who are elderly, children under 5, or people with weakened immune systems are more prone to hospitalization. While most recover fine, some may require additional care, so act fast.
