Former NHL player and current Nottingham Panthers player Adam Johnson died on October 28th, 2023 during an NHL match between the Sheffield Steelers. Authorities say that the 29 year-old suffered a serious cut to his throat, which came from the blade from an opponent’s skate during a mid-ice collision. More than 8,000 fans were inside the arena watching the incident take place, and they were all asked to leave in the aftermath. Adam was quickly rushed to the hospital but has since, sadly, passed away. This situation has sparked mass conversation in the hockey community regarding how safe the blades on the skates really are, and what alternatives they sport could possibly turn to.
