Over in the northern state of Kano, Nigeria, an outbreak of diphtheria is spreading at an alarming rate. Cases have been reported since May of last year, but the rate of new cases is rising at an alarming rate. There have been about 17,000 reported cases this year in Nigeria alone. And now the disease has spread to neighboring countries. Doctors have said that there is a high mortality rate in children specifically. Another huge issue with this outbreak is that they cannot supply enough vaccines quick enough for it to be effective. Hesitance with the vaccine, and lack of awareness surrounding the vaccines has made it hard to get anywhere with the outbreak. But they’ll keep trying.
