In Kerala, a southern state in India, authorities are rushing to contain the deadly outbreak caused by what is known as the “Nipah virus” after two people died from the virus in just one day. Nipah is a zoonotic virus, initially transmitted from animals to humans, however, it can also be transmitted through contaminated food or directly between people. September 14th, 2023 schools have been shut down and hundreds have been tested to prevent its spread, the virus has still been detected in multiple districts so Kerala’s chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan takes a stand to urge residents in those districts to keep caution and to follow the health department’s safety guidelines. “We should not be afraid, but face this situation with caution,” Vijayan states online. Having the state’s fourth outbreak since 2018, will they keep causing widespread panic? Or will they finally have this virus contained for the sake of their people?
