On September 12th 2023, France ordered a halt to the sale of Apple’s IPhone 12 after the country’s radiation watchdog stated that after some tests it showed that the phone exceeded European radiation exposure limits by 40%. Also according to a report by Bloomberg, Apple allegedly told their support team to “not provide any information when consumers ask about radiation risks.”
French regulators have told Apple that if they do not resolve this issue with a software update then they will issue a recall on all Apple devices in France. This recall if it were to happen would cost Apple hundreds of millions of dollars.
All of this has sparked concern over other European countries as Germany and Belgium will review France’s research findings themselves to most likely issue a halt of sale as well. While Italy and Spain are closely monitoring the current situation and if it gets worse then both countries will mostly issue a halt of sale and a recall.
