The upcoming release of the PS5 Slim has been accompanied by the addition of an optional disk drive that could be connected to the side of the PS5 and paired to the device. Many people were confused, however, at Sony’s explanation that the optional disk drive would require an internet connection in order to pair it to the PS5. This raised many questions as to why an internet connection would be required to connect a physical piece of hardware to the PS5 and why Sony would add this extra step in setup. It has been suspected that it would only require an internet connection upon first pairing and is used to pair the disk drive to the PS5’s motherboard in order to prevent video game piracy.
