Microsoft’s Relationship With OpenAI Could Lead to UK Antitrust Investigation

Microsoft%E2%80%99s+Relationship+With+OpenAI+Could+Lead+to+UK+Antitrust+Investigation

The United Kingdom has started gathering information about Microsoft’s relations and ties with OpenAI which will conclude on Jan 3, 2024. Depending on the information the UK can find, they may open a phase 1 investigation into Microsoft’s potential breaking of antitrust laws. Microsoft’s President, Brad Smith, has stated that they will have a non-voting member observer on the board of OpenAI after Sam Altman was removed and then reinstated as CEO of OpenAI in late November of this year. While the UK fears this may be a way for Microsoft to gain control of the OpenAI board and may hint towards an acquisition of the company, Smith further iterates that it is very different from an acquisition and that they will fully cooperate with the UK in their information gathering.
